Job Title: Data Steward
Department: Data Governance & Management
Reporting To: Head – Data Governance / Analytics Lead
Role Purpose The Data Steward will be responsible for executing data governance initiatives by managing data quality, metadata (data dictionary), data accessibility, and security to ensure effective use and compliance of data across the organization.
Key Responsibilities Governance & Policy Enforcement Implement and enforce data governance policies and procedures approved by governance bodies.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with data regulations.
Data Quality & Lifecycle Management Build and manage processes for data profiling, monitoring, and cleansing of critical data elements (CDEs).
Oversee the complete data lifecycle from creation to archival, ensuring adherence to retention and disposal policies.
Ensure high data quality (accuracy, recency, completeness) for critical business needs.
Metadata Management Maintain and update the data dictionary in collaboration with business functions and the Insights & Reporting team.
Ensure data is understandable, accessible, and fit-for-use across departments.
Security & Compliance Collaborate with InfoSec and IT to enforce data protection measures for PII/SPII data per compliance standards.
Manage user-level access to data based on business needs and approval workflows.
Support and lead internal and external audit compliance activities, addressing any findings.
Standardization & Controls Develop and enforce enterprise data standards, taxonomies, and naming conventions.
Facilitate process documentation and audit readiness of all data governance-related activities.
Collaboration & Leadership Build a strong understanding of data across the card lifecycle and storage layers.
Engage stakeholders to capture evolving data needs and drive governance adoption.
Lead and manage a team of up to 3 direct reportees.
Measures of Success≥ 95% data quality score across CDEs.
Timely updates to the enterprise data dictionary.
100% adherence to audit and compliance deadlines.
Successful implementation of data governance projects within agreed timelines.
Technical Skills & Experience Strong working knowledge of data governance tools and technologies (e.g., SQL, ETL pipelines, data catalogues like Apache Atlas).
Proficiency in data profiling, validation, and cleaning methodologies.
Familiarity with API integration, middleware, and ETL processes.
Understanding of data privacy laws and frameworks (e.g., GDPR, DPDP Bill).
Critical Competencies Proven experience leading governance or data management teams in the BFSI domain.
Track record of implementing enterprise-wide data governance or compliance projects.
Strong understanding of business KPIs and how they relate to data quality.
Experience in audit handling and closure (internal/external).
Team player with strong cross-functional collaboration skills.
Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal, and presentation.
Analytical mindset with a structured approach to problem-solving.
Educational Qualifications Mandatory: B.E / MCA in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
Preferred: PG in Data Management / Analytics from a reputed institute.
Certifications Desired: CDMP, CDS, DAMA, or equivalent data governance certifications.
