About the Opportunity

The Centre for Sustainability at Mahindra University invites applications for a Research Assistant (RA) position with background in atmospheric sciences and air pollution to support faculty-led research in the field of environmental sustainability and sustainable urban development. The RA will assist in conducting modeling, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and contributing to academic writing and presentations.

The applicant must have experience working with air quality and urban canopy modeling systems, such as the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF), including its chemistry (WRF-Chem) and urban canopy (WRF-UCM) modules, as well as models like the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx). This position is ideal for graduate students or recent graduates who are interested in pursuing academic or research careers. Salary for this position is competitive and will be aligned with the candidate’s background, role, and responsibilities. This RA position has the potential to transition into a PhD opportunity, contingent upon the candidate’s capabilities and expressed interest.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in developing, configuring, and optimising air quality modeling systems
• Analyse and validate model outputs against ground-based measurements
• Contribute to writing and editing research papers, reports, grant proposals, or policy briefs
• Support administrative and coordination tasks related to the research project(s)

Required Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with tools such as WRF-Chem, WRF-UCM, WRF-CAMx, ENVI-met or similar modeling software systems.
• Ability to analyse model outputs and validate them with measurement data using statistical methods
• Ability to work independently and manage time across multiple tasks

Preferred Qualifications/Skillsets

• Programming and coding skills for data analysis and visualisation – familiarity with running Python Codes/Scripts and writing add-ons for specific purposes
• Intent and ability to learn new methods/concepts on the fly and apply them to the task at hand
• Prior experience in academic or policy-oriented research
• Experience working with surface measurements such as CPCB CAAQMS/NAMP and sensor data.
