Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical EngineeringThe Department of Mechanical, Civil & Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is pleased to announce the availability of two PhD positions as part of a VIDI project focused on the development of next-generation high-performance and sustainable composite materials. The project seeks to draw inspiration from natural processes, such as hibernation, to enhance the resilience, ductility, and circularity of composite structures.We invite applications from highly motivated candidates for the following positions:PhD Position 1 – Multiscale Modelling & Design– Design fibre-reinforced composite architectures.– Utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and finite element modelling (FEM) to study material behaviour across multiple scales.PhD Position 2 – Advanced Manufacturing & Characterisation– Translate modelling concepts into hybrid composite materials.– Combine thermoplastic and thermoset matrices.– Employ advanced manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing and Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) to develop durable structures.Example application areas include wind turbine blades and offshore composite joints. Successful candidates will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary team and benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert supervision.

Requirements

– A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.– Strong interest in sustainable materials, modelling, or advanced manufacturing.– Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
