Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a talented Optical Engineer with a strong background in photonics to join our innovative team at Eon Space Labs. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in designing, assembling, and testing optical payloads for satellite and drone-based systems. Utilizing advanced optical design software such as Zemax, you will develop high-performance optical systems tailored for earth observation applications, including multispectral and hyperspectral imaging. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced startup environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive advancements in space and defense technology.

Responsibilities
  • Design Optical Payloads:

Develop optical systems for satellites and drones, including lens design for various spectral bands (Visible, Short-Wave Infrared, Mid-Wave Infrared, and Long-Wave Infrared) using Zemax or similar optical design software.
  • Assemble and Test Systems:

Build and test optical payloads to ensure they meet performance specifications, including conducting environmental testing for space and drone applications to verify reliability under conditions like temperature variations and vibrations.
  • Conduct Simulations and Analyses:

Perform optical simulations and analyses, such as ray tracing, wavefront analysis, and thermal management, to optimize system performance under diverse operational conditions.
  • Collaborate Across Teams:

Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate optical systems into satellite and drone platforms, ensuring compliance with SWaP constraints.
  • Document Processes:

Maintain detailed documentation of design processes, test results, and technical specifications to support product development and compliance with industry standards.
  • Drive Innovation:

Stay abreast of the latest advancements in optical engineering and photonics, contributing innovative ideas to enhance our payload technologies.
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, or LightTools.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, assembling, and testing optical systems.
  • Strong understanding of optics, photonics, and related technologies.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment with a proactive and collaborative approach.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience designing optical payloads for satellite or drone applications.
  • Knowledge of earth observation technologies, particularly multispectral and hyperspectral imaging systems.
  • Familiarity with Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) constraints in aerospace applications.
  • Expertise in optical design for Visible (VIS), Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR), Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR), or Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) spectral bands.
  • Understanding of space-qualified optical components and systems.
