This role ensures technical excellence, innovation, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery of design packages across all stages of ship construction—from concept through detailed engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:
  • Define and drive the design strategy aligned with organizational goals.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary design teams (naval architects, structural engineers, systems designers, etc.).
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on business development, tenders, and R&D planning.
  • Design Management:
  • Oversee the creation of concept designs, feasibility studies, and detailed engineering drawings for various types of vessels (commercial, defense, offshore, etc.).
  • Ensure all designs meet regulatory, class society, safety, and environmental standards (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, DNV, ABS, etc.).
  • Implement design control procedures and ensure proper documentation.
  • Project Oversight:
  • Allocate resources and prioritize design projects based on deadlines and complexity.
  • Coordinate with production, procurement, quality assurance, and clients during the entire shipbuilding lifecycle.
  • Manage changes in design specifications and address technical issues promptly.
  • Innovation & Technology:
  • Promote adoption of advanced design tools and digital shipbuilding (CAD, 3D modeling, PLM systems, FEA, CFD simulations).
  • Encourage innovative hull forms, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable design practices.
  • Team Development:
  • Mentor and guide senior designers and engineers.
  • Plan workforce development, training, and recruitment for the design department.
  • Compliance & Risk Management:
  • Monitor compliance with legal, safety, and classification society regulations.
  • Identify design-related risks and develop mitigation plans.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 12–15 years of experience in ship design, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of classification societies, marine design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, NAPA, Maxsurf, AVEVA Marine), and shipbuilding processes.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex ship design projects (commercial or defense).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Experience with hybrid propulsion systems, green ship design, or autonomous vessels.
  • Familiarity with digital twin technology and model-based systems engineering.
  • Strong understanding of cost estimation and production engineering.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Timely completion of design milestones.
  • Compliance with regulatory and class standards.
  • Design-to-build error rate.
  • Design innovation and cost efficiency.
