The European Union Delegation to Australia is looking for a Press and Information Assistant.

Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.The EU Delegation to Australia ensures the representation of the European Union in Australia, the promotion of bilateral relations in the areas of political, economic, trade and cultural cooperation, and the defence of values and interests of the European Union in the world.

We are looking for an energetic and highly motivated

Press and Information assistant

. Under the supervision of the Head of the Political, Press and Information Section (‘PPI’), the assistant contributes to the implementation of the Delegation's information and communications strategy (in particular social media).The successful candidate will carry out inter alia the following tasks:
  • Assist the Head of PPI Section and the Press and Information Officer in the preparation and implementation of the Delegation's communications and media strategy (in particular with regard to social media).
  • Draft and edit the Delegation Newsletter and the “EU Passport” (for cultural events) and contribute to other publications in consultation with other members of the Delegation.
  • Review the Delegation's social media and internet profile to ensure that it is informative, accurate and up-to-date.
  • Implement when appropriate social media campaigns launched by headquarters.
  • Monitor and collate web and social media statistics.
  • Organise and implement assigned public outreach activities, incl. follow-up.
  • Assist in meetings of the media and public diplomacy group, and ensure follow-up.
  • Contribute to monitoring and follow-up of EU-related coverage in the Australian media.
  • Keep media-related contact lists of the Delegation up to date and feed them into the general Delegation Database.
  • Under the direction of the Head of PPI Section, arrange information visits in Brussels for journalists and other multipliers.
  • Manage the shared drive for photos and videos – select and streamline audio-visual material.
  • Contribute to speeches, briefings as required.
  • Liaise with EEAS and disseminate relevant info across the Delegation.

Other Duties:

  • Back-up duties to other members of the PPI Section.
  • Back-up to the Delegation’s Education and Cultural focal point.
  • Support the Head of PPI section on consular matters and the meetings of the local consular counsellors’ network
The place of employment is Deakin (ACT), and the post will be available from 16/11/2025. This is a local agent post, classified in the function group 2. The base salary will depend on relevant and verified employment experience, typically starting from AUD 7,395 per month (excl. superannuation). The working hours are 37h30 per week, from Monday to Friday. There is a competitive benefits package, subject to certain conditions, including medical insurance.

The Candidate We Are Looking For Should Have

  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to focus on priorities as set by the Head of PPI Section and to organise work to be delivered on time and at the highest level of accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain good professional relationships with all relevant interlocutors.
  • Ability to understand new subjects quickly.
  • Ability to 'translate' complicated policy issues in a social media compatible language.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Must be service-oriented and flexible.

Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements

  • The candidate must be an Australian citizen, or holder of a valid visa authorising to reside and work full time in Australia.
  • Education: minimum graduate qualification in the relevant sector (journalism, media, Public Relations, political science, or related field)
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience in the relevant fields (media, online publishing, Public Relations etc.)
  • Language skills: English: level C1 or above (Common European Framework of Reference of Languages)
  • Computer literacy:
    • Microsoft Office.
    • Social media platforms and tools.
    • Excellent knowledge of digital media.
    • Excellent social media skills.
    • Ability to 'translate' complicated policy issues in a social media compatible language.

The Following Will Be Considered An Asset

  • Working experience linked to the EU / European affairs.
  • Proficiency in other EU languages.
  • Knowhow / Experience in producing audio-visual material.

The procedure

After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a shortlist of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the position on the basis of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. A range of 6 to 8 candidates will be invited to the interview.Only candidates admitted to the preselection phase will be contacted individually. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which may include a formal interview and a written test, if necessary. During this phase, the Selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post.The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; however, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.The Delegation will not supply additional information or discuss the selection procedure.
