As of 2022-23, the program operated in 5,192 communities and reached approximately 386,000 children. The program targets two subgroups of primary school students with different program components: students in grades 1-2 vs. students in grades 3 and above. For grades 1-2, the intervention includes two main components. First, Pratham volunteers support students through in-school activities. Second, Pratham volunteers support the mothers of these children through mother groups. For grades 3 and above, the intervention consists of an adaptation of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) program evaluated in earlier J-PAL studies. This study speaks to three key issues related to Indian childrens (lack of) mastery of foundational skills in mathematics and literacy. First, Prathams Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) program seeks to support students in grades three and above by remedying their lack of foundational skills. A key question is whether this learning gap in later grades can be addressed earlierin grades 1-2before it fully develops. A prior J-PAL study on Prathams work in Assam has also documented that the TaRL programs effectiveness can be strengthened by combining the grade-3 intervention with a community-based component. Here, for the program on grades 1-2, the effectiveness of a similar, complementary component for the earlier grades is of interest: mother groups. Third, we are particularly interested in whether the effects of the early-grade intervention either fade out or persist over time and whether the two interventions (grades 1-2 and 3-5) complement or substitute each other. Lastly, because of the muted impacts found by the earlier evaluation, and given Prathams subsequent changes to its program in Assam, we will also measure the effect of the revised grade-3 intervention. This pilot proposes the introduction of a canal monitor, an official appointed by the Government of Punjab who will ensure the coordinated operation of canal gates. We will investigate whether this intervention encourages farmers to use canal water for irrigation, thereby substituting away from groundwater extraction and lowering energy consumption. Globally, urbanization is accelerating, with Asia and Africa driving most of the growth. In many developing countries, urban expansion outpaces infrastructure development, deepening urban poverty. India exemplifies these challenges, with over 85% of its urban workforce in the informal sector, where poverty and inequality. Addressing these issues requires innovative solutions focused on the most vulnerable communities. The Bihar Urban Graduation Program, a strategic initiative within the Satat Jeevikoparjan Yojana (SJY) Urban program, is designed to address these critical issues. The program adopts a multifaceted approach to combat urban poverty by promoting sustainable livelihoods, enhancing financial inclusion, fostering social empowerment, and ensuring access to basic services. By addressing poverty from multiple dimensions, SJY Urban seeks to reduce economic vulnerability and increase resilience among the urban poor. About the position: J-PAL South Asia at the Institute for Financial Management and Research seeks qualified applicants for the position of Research Associate (RA). The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management and research experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. The RA will report to the Research Manager and work closely with the Principal Investigators (PIs). The RA will be based out of Patna, and work out of the JEEViKA office. Within the 2024-25 academic year, the government aims to reach approximately 456,000 students across 93 educationally low-performing administrative blocks. As the government intends to implement this programme at a large scale this year, we aim to embed quick process research activities that will support the government (a) with actionable insights on optimising programme implementation as they seek to achieve scale, and (b) set up large-scale monitoring systems within the government to effectively monitor and enable different levels of the education system to use of programme data for feedback and course correction. The RA will be responsible for a series of primary data collection exercises. We are seeking a motivated Research Associate to lead and support Monitoring Evaluation efforts for scaling the Every Child Counts (ECC) program across Andhra Pradesh and parts of North India (Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi). The role involves engagement with partner NGOs, government stakeholders and internal teams to ensure robust evidence-driven implementation of the ECC program. This project aims to test the effectiveness of a new model for identification of ambassadors to spread information on routine immunization. The study will focus on verifying the centrality of gossips/ambassadors selected through a model of phoney surveys conducted by the NGO Suvita. The study will be conducted in a sample of 450 villages. During the first phase of the study, gossips will be identified by field surveys by J-PAL, phone surveys by Suvita and through random selection by Suvita from Suvitas database. The second phase of the study would be information dissemination. In each of the 450 villages, J-PAL SA surveyors would seed the information to a maximum of five ambassadors who would in turn inform the villagers to register onto a text messaging service to receive information on immunization. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to explore the prospects of crowdsourcing in the context of pest incidence on crops among smallholder farmers in India. The RCT will provide insights on the following research questions: What key factors motivate farmers to share accurate information from which others could learn (including financial and non-financial incentives) What factors would influence farmers willingness to listen to, trust, and act on information derived from crowdsourcing Does acting on crowdsourced information help improve yields Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Manage the implementation of research activities for the project, ensuring adherence to appropriate rigor, policies, timelines, and budgets.
