Job DescriptionTo operate studio equipment and to realise production requirements for transmissions and recordings effectively and efficiently, utilising all the technical resources available, and to provide a comprehensive point of reference for journalistic and operational staff, including on the day staffing requirements, and dealing with technical queries.

  • Operate audio studio equipment effectively and safely, complying with Collective Newsroom Safety Regulations. This will include the use of mixing desks, controlling the routing of outside sources.
  • Operate playout and production-based systems as well as recording, editing, mixing, and replaying material.
  • To work with teams in the studio, offering operational and creative guidance and advice.
  • Be responsible for, and able to offer advice on, the technical quality, aural balance and audibility of programme material.
  • · Provide assistance with forward planning for Production Operations (Audio) and its programme makers.
  • Using knowledge of developments within the sound industry to provide advice on production needs and to brief colleagues on developing technical procedures.
  • Develop specialist audio skills whilst retaining the ability to balance and control a whole range of radio productions, live and pre-recorded, working to the highest level either with Studio Manager colleagues or single-handed.
  • Identify when problems arise in broadcast-critical systems and be able to work around them where necessary.
  • Keep pace with developments in the professional audio field and make use of opportunities at work to take a proactive approach to self-development.
  • Provide assistance with technical arrangements which will include forward planning of own outside broadcasts when necessary.
  • Regularly liaise with the Operations Manager and other members of the team, discussing and suggesting changes and improvements to the services offered.
  • Responsible for the sound balance and control of large-scale radio/TV productions including those which fully exploit the technical resources available, but are generally constant in style, and of an established format. Such productions will require some interpretation of the producer’s intentions.
  • Studio and outside broadcasts of an established format, including those where no producer is present, or where the producer is remote from the control point during transmission.
  • Responsible for the sound balance and control in television studios where live and recorded productions are of an established format, consist mainly of the spoken word and which may include outside source contributions with associated communication circuits.
Requirements

Essential Skills, Experience, Knowledge

  • Good operational knowledge of sophisticated sound equipment and recent developments in programme making methods.
  • Good knowledge of current affairs and new audio trends in the market
  • Excellent aural judgment and a proven ability to prioritise in demanding situations.
  • Understanding of the theory and use of operational equipment, and ability to undertake basic front-line maintenance on this equipment when necessary.
  • Operational knowledge of professional sound equipment and recent developments in programme making methods.
  • Experience of working in teams with an ability to form effective working relationships quickly, to inspire confidence and to influence others.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and an ability to operate and communicate safe working practices in the workplace.
  • Good personal and communication skills.
  • Operational experience in live radio.
  • To be familiar with audio file formats as used in the digital domain.
