Role & responsibilities 1. Tool Room Operations Efficiency & Productivity: Set daily, weekly, and monthly performance goals for tool room staff. Implement time-tracking or task-tracking systems to measure productivity. Conduct regular reviews to identify bottlenecks or inefficiencies and adjust workflows accordingly. Tool Design, Development, & Maintenance: Implement a regular review system for tools, jigs, molds, and fixtures to ensure they are in optimal condition. Schedule periodic audits to check tool effectiveness and reliability. Timely Delivery to Production: Develop a clear schedule and system for tracking tool delivery timelines. Communicate proactively with production teams to understand their tool requirements and deadlines. 2. Design & Development Creating & Reviewing 2D/3D Designs: Set clear guidelines and specifications for design submissions (e.g., file formats, detail levels). Conduct design reviews with cross-functional teams to gather feedback and ensure alignment with production needs. Optimizing Designs for Manufacturability: Collaborate closely with production teams to identify design improvements that can reduce manufacturing complexity or cost. Use design for manufacturability (DFM) principles to minimize material waste and assembly complexity. 3. Cutting & Machining Supervision of Cutting Operations: Set up standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cutting and water jet processes. Regularly check the accuracy and precision of cuts and ensure that tools used are up to spec. Equipment Maintenance: Create a maintenance schedule for all cutting and machining equipment to prevent breakdowns. Ensure all team members are trained to identify early signs of wear and tear on equipment. 4. Quality Control Tool Inspections: Implement a standard checklist for tool inspections that covers critical dimensions, surface finishes, and material properties. Set up a system for documenting inspection results and tracking tool performance over time. Quality Issue Resolution: Develop a rapid response system for addressing quality issues in production. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions. 5. Team Management Team Leadership & Training: Organize regular training sessions on new technologies, tools, and safety practices. Establish a mentorship program where experienced toolmakers can train less experienced staff. Task Assignment & Performance Monitoring: Use project management tools or team dashboards to assign tasks and track progress. Hold regular check-ins to review performance, provide feedback, and discuss improvement opportunities. 6. Inventory & Maintenance Inventory Management: Implement an inventory tracking system (e.g., barcode scanning or software) to monitor raw materials, tools, and spare parts. Conduct regular audits to ensure inventory levels are accurate and prevent overstocking or shortages. Preventive Maintenance Scheduling: Develop a preventive maintenance schedule based on manufacturer recommendations and usage patterns. Keep track of spare parts and consumables to avoid delays due to lack of supplies. 7. Collaboration Coordination with Teams: Hold regular cross-departmental meetings to ensure alignment with production, maintenance, and quality goals. Develop clear communication channels for requesting tooling support and addressing issues promptly. Technical Support: Be available to troubleshoot tooling-related issues and provide on-the-spot solutions.
