Job Description We are seeking a skilled and motivated Principal Application Engineer to join our team, specializing in high-voltage GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology. With at least 10 years of experience, you will be responsible for driving product definition, developing innovative reference designs, and supporting customers through technical expertise. You will also contribute to the creation of technical materials and relay valuable feedback to guide product development. Key Responsibilities Product Definition: Lead the definition of new high-voltage GaN products, ensuring alignment with customer needs and industry trends. Reference Design & Evaluation Board Development: Design and develop innovative reference designs and evaluation boards using high-voltage GaN technology to demonstrate product capabilities and help customers integrate the products effectively. Customer Support: Provide expert customer support, including on-site troubleshooting, and conducting customer visits to offer technical guidance and resolve issues. Technical Documentation: Write and develop various technical collaterals, including application notes, white papers, and marketing materials that communicate product benefits, use cases, and best practices to customers. Customer Feedback Integration: Collect and relay customer feedback to the product team, ensuring that insights are utilized in shaping future product definitions and improvements. Qualifications Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical/Electronics/Power Electronics Engineering or in any of the related field Relevant 2+ years of experience working with high/low-voltage GaN technology and power electronics Hands-on experience in AC-DC, DC-DC, or DC-AC converter development for industrial, datacenter, consumer, or computing applications Nice to have: Experience in embedded firmware for power converters Excellent skills in testing high-speed WBG (Wide Bandgap) device switching Strong fundamentals in power electronics with a focus on low-voltage GaN-based systems Excellent technical writing skills for producing application notes, white papers, and documentation Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working directly with customers Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical challenges Skills Proficiency in Altium for schematic design and PCB layout Experience with power electronics simulation tools such as Simetrix, Simplis, PLECS, and LTSpice Knowledge and hands-on experience in designing magnetic components (e.g., inductors, transformers) Additional Information Renesas Electronics Corporation empowers a safer, smarter and more sustainable future where technology helps make our lives easier. Job Description We are seeking a skilled and motivated Principal Application Engineer to join our team, specializing in low-voltage GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology. With at least 10 years of experience in power electronics, you will be responsible for driving product definition, developing innovative reference designs, and supporting customers through deep technical expertise. You will also contribute to the creation of technical materials and relay valuable feedback to guide product development. Key Responsibilities Product Definition: Lead the definition of new low-voltage GaN products, ensuring alignment with customer needs and emerging market demands. Reference Design & Evaluation Board Development: Design and develop innovative reference designs and evaluation boards using low-voltage GaN technology to demonstrate product capabilities and help customers integrate the products effectively. LV GaN Focus Areas: Develop reference designs for industrial, consumer, and computing applications Optimize switching performance in compact, thermally constrained environments Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address EMI, thermal, and layout challenges unique to LV GaN designs Customer Support: Provide expert customer support, including on-site troubleshooting and customer visits to offer technical guidance and resolve design issues. Technical Documentation: Create high-quality technical collaterals including application notes, white papers, and marketing materials that communicate product benefits, use cases, and best practices. The ideal candidate has track-record of successfully leading the hardware development, validation and integration for power solutions which seamlessly combine several power converters (AC-DC, DC-AC, DC-DC), multiple MCUs/MPUs (ARM Cortex-A/M, Renesas proprietary core), numerous sensors and various connectivity ICs (WiFi, Bluetooth/LE, LTE). In this exciting role, you will be responsible for the entire proof-of-concept board prototyping: schematic design, PCB layout and simulation, BoM selection and board test and validation will be your daily duties. Exceptional communication skills will help you working with System Architect and Software Engineers to ensure successful system integration, in our world-wide, customer-oriented, expanding team. This position allows for a hybrid work schedule with a mix of work spent between office, test & validation laboratory and working from home. Role Responsibilities In this role, you will be responsible for: Lead the design and development of complex power electronics hardware (100s W to 10s of kW, including power converters, application MCUs, sensors and other circuits. Translate system requirements into modular and scalable schematics, PCB layouts and Bill-of-Material (BoM) selection. Apply advanced knowledge of power conversion topologies (AC-DC, Inverter, Isolated and non-isolated DC-DC, LDO), magnetics, control theory, and discrete power devices (Silicon MOSFETs and GaN FETs) to optimize designs for efficiency, electrical performance, solution scalability & modularity, BoM size & cost, and manufacturability. Perform board level Thermal, Signal and Power Integrity (SI/PI), EMC/EMI Simulations to predict system KPIs, identify potential issues and optimize design before physical prototyping. Manage hardware aspects of power electronics projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and project milestones. Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g., System Architect, Power Product Design Team, Software development team, external vendors) to achieve seamless integration of hardware with other system components (e.g., Software and Firmware, solution cabinet/enclosure, validation equipment, etc.). Evaluate, troubleshoot, and debug hardware prototypes, identify root causes of failures, and implement corrective actions to the original design. Qualifications Candidate profile MSEE is required, PhD is a plus, with 4-7 years of relevant experience in Power Converters design and development. Solid knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals, strong analytical and problem-solving skills. In-depth knowledge of PCB layout techniques for power conversion topologies, especially DC-AC Inverters, Resonant Converters (LLC, CLLLC, etc.), Dual Active Bridge and other Isolated AC-DC and DC-DC topologies.
