Patent Engineer

Educational Qualification

Essential qualifications include a BE, B.Tech, or M.Tech in Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, or Electrical Engineering, with 2 to 8 years of relevant experience in the tech industry such as wireless telecom, software, or semiconductors, including patent analysis and OSS compliance. In-house experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Work Experience

The candidate should have between 2 to 9 years of work experience. They must be skilled in using patent search databases such as Derwent Innovation and Orbit, and familiar with analytics methodologies including novelty search, freedom to operate, invalidation, technology search, patent classification, and infringement analysis. Experience in retrieving legal and prosecution-related information from patent office websites like USPTO PAIR and EP Register is essential.

Additionally, the candidate should have practical experience with open-source software license validations, OSS compliance, and vulnerability analysis, including handling license obligations and compliance discussions related to OSS scans. Industry experience in telecom architectures such as WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G, 5G, LTE, wireless charging, and audio/video technologies is highly desirable. Experience in electric vehicle hardware/software, vehicular wireless communication systems, connected cars, battery systems, ADAS, telematics, and vehicle charging systems will be an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves educating and motivating engineers about the creation and protection of intellectual property. Conducting ideation workshops and coordinating with various business units to encourage new idea generation and submissions is an important part of the role. The candidate will work closely with R&D engineers to review ideas and improve the conversion rate of invention disclosures to patents.

Evaluating ideas for patentability and identifying key features for patent protection is a critical responsibility, alongside performing patent studies concerning patentability, freedom to operate, invalidation, state-of-the-art searches, and infringement analysis across diverse technologies. Managing and ensuring compliance with open-source software licensing is also a key part of the position.
