Job Description

An EEG (Electroencephalogram) Technician is a healthcare professional who uses specialized equipment to monitor and record brain activity . They prepare patients for EEG tests, operate and maintain the equipment, analyze data, and communicate findings to physicians. This information is crucial for diagnosing and treating neurological conditions like epilepsy, sleep disorders, and brain injuries. Key Responsibilities: Performing EEG tests: EEG Technicians prepare patients, apply electrodes to the scalp, operate the EEG machine, and ensure accurate data collection. Maintaining equipment: They clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot EEG equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly. Data analysis and reporting: EEG Technicians analyze EEG recordings, identify abnormalities, and report findings to physicians. Patient care: They ensure patient comfort, safety, and compliance with infection control protocols during the test. Record keeping: EEG Technicians maintain accurate records of test results and equipment maintenance. Additional duties: They may also assist with training other staff, maintaining inventory, and keeping patient information confidential. Typical Work Environment: EEG Technicians often work in hospitals, neurology clinics, sleep centers, and epilepsy monitoring units. They may also work in outpatient EEG labs or even remotely monitoring patients. Education and Training: While minimum requirements usually include a high school diploma, many EEG Technicians pursue additional education or training, such as formal CAAHEP-accredited neurodiagnostic programs or ABRET-recognized EEG programs. Becoming a Registered EEG Technologist typically requires passing the ABRET EEG exam. In essence, EEG Technicians play a vital role in the diagnostic process, using their technical skills and knowledge of neurophysiology to help physicians identify and treat neurological conditions.
