AS/400 Migration Consultant

Role & Responsibilities

1. Analysis and Planning

• Analyze existing AS/400 applications (RPG, CL, COBOL) and DB2/400 databases to understand functionality, business logic, and data structures.
• Develop migration strategies including re-platforming, re-hosting, re-factoring, or re-writing applications in Java.
• Assess and document technical requirements for the new Java-based system.

2. Development and Implementation

• Design and develop Java applications that replicate or enhance the functionality of AS/400 systems.
• Write and execute data migration scripts to transfer data from DB2/400 to target databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL), ensuring data integrity.
• Integrate new Java applications with existing enterprise systems and third-party services.
• Perform code refactoring and optimization for performance and maintainability.

3. Testing and Quality Assurance

• Develop and execute unit, integration, and system tests for migrated applications and data.
• Collaborate with QA teams to ensure the new system meets functional and non-functional requirements.
• Debug and resolve issues during testing and post-migration support.

4. Collaboration and Communication

• Work closely with business stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure alignment with business needs.
• Collaborate with developers, architects, DBAs, and project managers.
• Provide technical documentation including system designs, migration procedures, and user manuals.

5. Mentorship and Continuous Improvement

• Mentor junior developers on AS/400 legacy systems and Java development best practices.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in application modernization and migration.

Preferred Candidate Profile

AS/400 Expertise

• Proficiency in RPG III/IV/ILE, CL, and COBOL.
• Experience with DB2/400 database management.
• Strong understanding of AS/400 system architecture and operations.

Java Development

• Proficiency in Java and related frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot, Hibernate).
• Experience with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and front-end frameworks (e.g., Angular, React) is a plus.
• Solid knowledge of database technologies and SQL.

Migration Experience

• Proven experience in migrating legacy systems, especially from AS/400 to Java.
• Familiarity with data migration tools and techniques.
