Postgresql Database Administrator

Job Title:

Keyword Primary: PostgreSQL DBA, Restore, upgrade, recovery, Vacuum, Replication.
Responsibilities: • New Installation, Provisioning, Database config parameter updates / adjustments, decommissioning of database• Manage and maintain PostgreSQL databases to ensure high availability and performance.• Implement and manage high availability solutions for PostgreSQL (e.g., Patroni, repmgr, or streaming replication) and disaster recovery.• Plan, test, execute the security patching and major version upgrades with minimal downtime.• Manage database migration from legacy platforms or other DBMS (e.g., Oracle to PostgreSQL).• Implement proactive health checks and capacity planning.• Handling alerts reported via monitoring, space utilization, storage, memory, and CPU. Analyze trends to prevent outages due to capacity limits.• Proactively identify and resolve locking/blocking sessions, bloat, vacuum-related issues and address security alerts like failed logins or account lockouts.• Optimize resource utilization (CPU, memory, I/O) and eliminate performance bottlenecks.• Use of various tools to assess performance and suggest improvements.• Monitor database performance and capacity and perform in-depth analysis and query tuning as necessary.• Take responsibility for the architecture and design of database solutions.• Work independently and in a self-organized manner to manage and optimize databases.• Ensure the implementation of IT security standards and database security policies and maintain them.• Collaborate with server & development teams to support database requirements and projects.• Create and maintain documentation and operational procedures.• Manage and perform different backup and restore (Point in Time Recovery) operations using Commvault systems.• Primary technical contact for database-related issues during IT crisis calls.• Handle complex and critical issues escalated from L1/L2 DBAs.• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring or high-impact problems.• Performance Report Analysis, Error log analysis and technical troubleshooting• User and Access management for PostgreSQL databases• Logical/physical backup and restore using pg_dump, pg_restore, pg_basebackup, and replication slots for logical replication.• Mentor L1/L2 DBAs; provide guidance on best practices.• Maintain and create detailed SOPs, KB articles, architecture diagrams, and runbooks.• Participate in audit activities and documentation updates• Review, approve, and implement database changes in line with ITIL or organizational change processes.• Automate database maintenance tasks and deployments using scripts or configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Bash, Python).• Conduct periodic DR drill simulations to validate backup integrity and recovery time objectives (RTO/RPO). Knowledge of added advantage: Knowledge of Oracle Database administration. Audit security controls: encryption (TDE), auditing, roles, privileges. Compliance with organizational and industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, SOX). Database vulnerability scans, report review, and mitigation planning. Skillsets & Experience:• PostgreSQL DBA \ Opensource DBA.• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL HA solutions.• Experience with patching, upgrades, and migrations.• Strong skills in monitoring and performance tuning.• Excellent problem-solving abilities and the ability to work under pressure.• Very good communication skills and team spirit.• Independent and self-organized working style.• Expertise in working with Linux operating systems.• Expertise in working with pgAdmin, putty, pgBadger, pgBackRest, Prometheus/Grafana, Ansible (for automation)• Experience in implementing IT security standards such as CIS PostgreSQL Benchmark, SSL/TLS, Role-Based Access Control.• Experience with Commvault Backup & Restore systems.• Strong knowledge of ITSM Framework and best practices.
