Job Summary:

E&M Outpatient Visit Level Medical Coder

Key Responsibilities:

• Review outpatient visit documentation (e.g., office visits, consultations) and assign accurate E&M levels and diagnosis codes.
• Ensure coding meets all CMS E&M coding standards and updates (e.g., 2021 E&M guidelines).
• Validate medical necessity, provider documentation completeness, and code selection accuracy.
• Communicate with providers to clarify documentation issues and ensure compliance.
• Collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams to resolve coding-related denials and rejections.
• Stay updated with coding updates, payer regulations, and industry best practices.
• Meet productivity and quality targets as per organizational standards.
• Participate in routine audits, feedback sessions, and coding quality improvement discussions.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Education:

  Bachelors degree in life sciences, medical, or related fields preferred.

• Certification:

  Active CPC, COC, CCS-P, or equivalent AAPC/AHIMA certification is mandatory.

• Experience:

  Minimum 2+ years of experience in E&M outpatient coding, specifically office visit levels.
• Expertise in 2021 E&M coding guidelines.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and clinical workflows.
• Familiarity with EHR systems and medical coding tools (3M, Optum Encoder, etc.).
• Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience with multi-specialty outpatient coding (e.g., Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics).
• Exposure to quality-based programs like HCC, MIPS, or RAF scoring.
• Experience in coding audits or coding QA processes.
